DAY TEN | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 19
An Ambition to Serve
Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
Philippians 2:3 (NKJV)
The dictionary definition of ambition is, "a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work." There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with that on the surface, but the issue is the motivation for, and beneficiary of the ambition. When we are motivated by self, that is when there is a problem. When all the energy, focus, desire, and intention is directed inward, rather than our growing and becoming more helpful, we are diminished and more of a burden than a blessing. If the motivation is to serve and bless, and the beneficiaries are those around us—especially those in need—we grow. We grow more humble, more like Jesus, and more into the person He designed us to be.
Father, we thank You for the example of Jesus whose ambition was to serve You and all mankind by humbling Himself beyond what we can comprehend. Help us to imitate and emulate Him by allowing the Holy Spirit to show us and grow us in seeing that the highest ambition we could have is to serve You and others. We choose to make our life’s ambition the service of the King and those to whom You send us. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
“Not all ambition is selfish ambition, and there is a good ambition to glorify God and serve Him with everything we have.” (Dave Guzik)
