We are continuing a series of messages entitled God Our Father, studying the ways in which our Heavenly Father has made us blessed, blameless and beloved through the saving work of Jesus the Son. We are seeking to possess the privileges and promises granted to us by the Father’s great grace, as well as pursuing the privileged responsibilities we have as imitators and dear children of God.
Last week, we looked at what it means for us to become beloved followers of the Father and the Son, beloved friends of the Father and the Son, and beloved family of and through the Father and the Son. We looked at the truth that when God’s love is revealed and released, it requires a response from us, in us and through us. The only righteous response to His love is to receive it by faith and release it in loving and loyal obedience.
This week, we are looking at what it means to be rooted in the Beloved, grounded in the Beloved, and growing in the Beloved, Christ Jesus the Son (Eph. 3:14-21). As we have been accepted, approved and adopted in the Beloved, so we must be rooted, grounded and growing in His love, in us and through us. The Beloved Son pointed to and provided the way—receive from God the Father His love without end and release it without end to the ends of the earth until the end.
Rooted In The Beloved The word rooted in Ephesians 3:17 comes from the verb in Greek, rhizoo, which means to cause to take root, to become firmly rooted or fixed. It suggests the thought of something taking place in the past and having an ongoing and ever-increasing effect in the present and the future. Paul is saying that the love of Christ is the cause of our relationship with Him, the condition of our relationship with Him and the ongoing ever-deepening communion we have with Him. By becoming more and more deeply rooted in the love of the Beloved Son, we grow in receiving God’s comprehensive fullness and then releasing His love and life-giving power into the lives of others. Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians represents his prayer for believers of all times—that they and we would have an ever-deepening revelation of the Father’s love in the Beloved Son that would continue to grow into an ever-increasing fruitfulness in releasing that love to others.
Grounded In The Beloved The word grounded comes from the verb in Greek, themilioo, which means to lay a basis for, to build upon a foundation, to be founded and grounded. The foundation of our lives is to be the love of God the Father in Jesus the Son. The deeper we are founded and grounded on and in God’s love, the more we can grow up and go up in spiritual strength and stature. Being ever rooted in the Beloved enables us to draw rich spiritual nourishment for our souls. Being ever founded and grounded on and in the Beloved enables us to be immovable, unshakeable and upwardly rising in edification and expansion.
Growing In The Beloved God’s grace is a divine doorway that leads to developing into our divine destiny in the Lord Jesus. Being rooted in the Beloved and grounded in the Beloved causes us to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In Ephesians 4:15-16, Paul writes but speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. His message is clear—divine love is the controlling principle that guides every godly process and practice, leading to great growth by God’s great grace.
Remember: Being rooted, grounded and growing in the love of the Beloved Son is God our Father’s provision for us to be full, faithful and fruitful in everything.
