Gardening, for many of us (myself included, until a few years ago!), is a lost art. Less than a century ago, most people were growing some of their own food and most ladies had some sort of flowers they grew in their yards. This month, we’ll take a look at all the ways to cultivate (or fake!) a green thumb that highlights your interest, be it flower or vegetable!
One of the first things you’ll need when doing any sort of outdoor gardening is a set of tools. Now, unless you have a field you’re planning to plow, this basic list, which can be purchased at any local hardware store or nursery, will get you on the right track for your basic gardening needs!
- Gardening gloves (to protect your hands from dirt and any potentially sharp objects)
- Small garden trowel (to dig up your dirt!)
- Kneeling pad (your knees will thank you later!)
- Watering can or garden hose with a gentle spray nozzle
There are many options when it comes to sourcing your growing materials! Your local Lowe’s, Home Depot or Walmart garden centers will have much of what you need, but I always like to look a bit more locally and support our neighbors when we can. There are many great local nurseries around the Nashville area who supply tools, seeds, starter plants, soil, pots, etc. If you’re a little “crunchier” minded, you might be looking for a place that offers solutions to growing things without pesticides, using organic fertilizers, etc. These aren’t easy to find, but one place in the south Nashville area is a company called A Greener Way – they have everything you could need – great potting soil, mulches, starter plants (organic!), etc.
So as we enter into the month of March, start thinking about what you want to accomplish this growing season, and watch for additional ideas and tips here on the blog this month to help get your garden growing!
