Making homemade apple butter has been a family tradition for many years. I usually make it in the fall as the spices make your home so aromatic with the smells of the season. Our family’s most favorite way to eat the apple butter is on a homemade biscuit that has butter dripping from the sides and accompanied with homemade pork sausage or bacon!

  • Peel, core, slice apples, and fill a crockpot with apples.
  • Add sugar, cinnamon, cloves and salt to apples in crockpot and mix thoroughly.
  • Place lid on crockpot and cook on medium heat overnight (8-15 hours) depending on how intensely your crockpot heats up.
  • Now for canning! Prepare the canning jars and bands on canning jars by washing and rinsing.
  • Boil the lids.
  • Then, fill jars with hot apple butter and place lid and band on jar tightly (make sure the lids are secure).
  • Jars will “pop” when sealed.
